What is a personal US tax identification number (ITIN)?
An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is a nine-digit identification number issued by the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to individuals who do not have a Social Security number (SSN) but are required to file US tax returns.
It is used to file tax returns and pay taxes on US income, such as rental income, investment gains, or proceeds from sales.
Format & Structure
The ITIN looks exactly like a US Social Security number: it begins with the digit "9" and follows the format 9XX-XX-XXXX.
